Petrushka CD cover

really pleased with how this turned out. It's mostly digital with handmade collaged pieces. Oh, and I used acrylic paint for the first time in probably 5 years. I liked it!

(I wish I could get this to print the way I want it to though. 5,000 test prints later, it's still not right. . .)

Preliminary Storyboards

making this made me feel really creepy.

Motion Test for American Apparel project

it's simple, but I think simplicity is good for this project.

Style Frames

3 slightly different concepts- I stayed with the tightly kerned Helvetica Neue bold since it's instantly recognizable as relating to American Apparel. Nice branding, Dov, even though you are basically a terrible human being.

(imagine this is hand done instead of a weirdo font)

I think I like this last approach the best because it will allow me to live out my fantasy of being Joseph Muller-Brockman. Man that magenta exported crazy though.

Awesome motion graphics/ animation

Their animations for The Mighty Boosh are amazing. A great example of every frame being a beautiful composition.

1890s

I ran into this chap from 120 years ago last night. I'm working on ads for an exhibit in a fictional museum about Victorian Travel. Does the lavender one look alright? I think the green definitely looks best, but I wanted to keep some variation since the copy will probably all be handled similarly and since it's all the same person. Maybe using just green is the way to go.

Roller Derby Program cover

probably one of my favorite pieces:

it's based on the Saul Bass poster for Vertigo.
. . . I think I did it justice in this homage. Saul Bass is definitely one of my favorite designers, so I try to be inspired by him as much as possible. I thought about using hand type similar to his on the original poster, but I ended up using Futura for consistency with the rest of the program. I think it worked out pretty well.

GO TO THE BOUT, IT'S SO MUCH FUN!!

Junior Review Poster/ music editing

1. here is my poster for junior review. It is the most foolish thing I have ever designed.
2. I finally figured out how to edit mp3s. I could use flash. . . or garageband, so I had to download Audacity. It's pretty easy to use so it's ok, but seriously Adobe, you need to make this easier!

All Tomorrow's Parties Inspiration

I'm no huge fan of Sagmeister, but really:
it's so good. I think about this design a lot. Usually I'm also not a huge fan of 90s grungy hand type either, but I can really get behind this one.

and this picture is just so cute that I want to look at it all the time. I'm glad it's in my little video.

Pavement's album covers were all so good too. Especially impressive because I really wish the 90s never existed.

Chicago Map Illustration

this printed so terribly! ugh.

I'm not very pleased with it. I hope the next project goes better!

Rubber City Rollergirls

preview of a cover illustration/design I did for the Rubber City Rollergirls:
If you want to see the whole thing I guess you have to go to the first bout of the season on March 13th at the John S Knight center.

ATP Project for Kinetic & Sequential Design

Originally, the event I was going to choose for the project was going to Pitchfork, but after looking at this year's Pitchfork line-up, I was really disappointed, so I went with ATP instead. Actually, after a bunch of research I learned that ATP is a really cool organization that strives to remain non-commercial by being curated by musical and visual artists instead of corporations. I think that's super, super cool and a really great idea, since there are certainly artists and groups that are willing! This year, the UK festivals are sponsored by Matt Groening and Pavement (the one band I would want to see at Pitchfork, actually)! I believe the New York ATP is sponsored by Iggy and the Stooges.

And besides all this, ATP (All Tomorrow's Parties) easily allows me to integrate one of my favorite bands of all time, The Velvet Underground. and maybe even Los Campesinos!

finished video. Though for some reason the music doesn't work on vimeo, so I guess I'll have to use the .swf file on the server. Technology hates me

Pulp Fiction Typography

This isn't a TV show intro or movie titles because I don't really watch TV. Or movies. BUT this is a typographical animation from Pulp Fiction, which is one of the few movies that I have both watched and liked.

First Post/Inspiration: 1970s Manga

The colors are always phenomenal and it has a certain joy to it that I think a lot of modern manga lacks. (this may just be the eye-sparkles, I'm not sure.) I like the art deco feel to the drawings as well; I see a little bit of Erte in the accessories and altogether the style is playful and fun and bursting with bright colors. (I do love the big hair and androgynous men and even those 70s fashions; if only the 70s had looked so good in real life!) Here are some examples:

Swan, by Kyoko Ariyoshi

and Bride of Deimos,  illustrated by Yuho Ashibe

I can't get enough of it! I'm not really an anime fan or anything like that, but I could look at these kinds of pictures all day long. Gorgeous!
